Such a great piece - this could not possibly resonate more right now, considering I’ve spent the summer with my grandparents… love them dearly but there are only so many fear-mongering, pessimistic, jaded comments I can take about headlines and intergenerational disconnect. I’ve worked a lot with kids, and they can be insanely annoying (think prime 6-7 era) but also really self-aware and mature in a lot of ways… the kids are alright I think :)
I want to make a world where today’s children believe they were born at the perfect time in history the same way I felt. Thats the measure of a good civilization imo.
I believe in human ingenuity and our ability to make things better for each successive generation. I think thats optimism. Progress isn’t always a straight line though, and I know there will be things and time periods that are not good on our journey.
In this age of AI, I am optimistic about it for the future using it as a tool for things, but I often catch myself relying to it instead of my own thinking which puts me into trouble. We can use the tools we have now efficiently but let’s not forget to use our gifted minds.

AI might not be good for creative work, but there are myriad other things it will improve. Yes, we have doomscrolling, but we also have access to all of the classic books and modern medicine and air travel. I think some people forget you don’t have to throw it ALL out: you can adopt what you like and what makes you better while still maintaining the analogue things you love.
No one is denying that. We didn’t uninvent cigarettes though. We changed their place in our society. They went from a cool and healthy and normal thing for everyone to do all the time to something that is universally considered a vice.

Good post, and I agree. But it doesn’t sound like you actually feel optimistic, more that you want to feel optimistic. Is that real? What’s the gap?

I think there is room for optimism while being aware that infinite scroll social media are the “cigarettes” of our age and should be treated as such.

Some level of shame is important for society.
I love a good cig but smoking all day is gross and will kill you very quickly
